Portofino

A candy-coloured fishing harbour turned the world's most photographed port -- pastel palazzi, one impossible piazza and yachts stacked three deep in summer.

When to go

May to September; August is packed with day-trippers, June and September are the sweet spot. Many hotels close November to March.

Getting there

Genoa airport 1h by private chauffeur, or helicopter to a nearby pad; Nice airport is a scenic 2h30 drive around the coast.

What we arrange

Hotels and chalets, private transfers and helicopters, restaurant reservations, guides, events and everything in between — on one WhatsApp thread.

Where to stay

The three we would book first.

Every hotel here is one we know personally. Tell us your dates and we will come back with availability, the right room category and any partner benefits that apply.

Puny

The piazzetta's old-guard trattoria -- trofie al pesto and the best people-watching in the village.

Things to do

Beyond the obvious.

01

Hike to San Fruttuoso Abbey

The coastal trail to the 10th-century abbey accessible only by foot or boat, with a swim and lunch on arrival.

02

Private boat to Cinque Terre

A day cruise east along the coast to the five cliffside villages, best seen from the water in summer.

03

Castello Brown

The clifftop castle above the harbour with the single best photograph of Portofino's bay.

04

San Giorgio church and lighthouse walk

The short climb past the church to the point, quiet even in August and best at golden hour.

Insider note

Stay in nearby Santa Margherita or Rapallo if hotels are full -- Portofino itself has almost no rooms, and everyone drives or boats in for the day.
